Chris, I replied to your email today.

Sodium Hydroxide has a pH of about 11 to 12, so it could not be used instead of HCL to 'activate' MMS.

You can get food grade citric acid, but it can cause problems for some people who ingest MMS1 or CDH. CA works fine to make CDS.
